Our Mission
Advancing the stewardship of our environment.
Our History
Riverside Nature Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is a home-grown organization with its roots deeply imbedded in the community. Founded in 1989, the center has been serving the community for more than a quarter of a century. Our purpose is simple, to advance the stewardship of our natural environment, yet the task is immense. By focusing our messages and lessons on Texas Hill Country environmental concerns, we are able to foster best practices in our own backyard which lead to a greater global awareness.
More than 13,000 visitors enjoy the Nature Center each year. They stroll through the Hill Country arboretum, pollinator garden, native healing garden, and wildflower meadow. Many gain valuable insight from the Riverscape, rainwater collection system, and wildscape.
Visitors also engage in our numerous educational opportunities including interactive exhibits, guided field trips, native plant sales, monthly NEd Talks, Bird Walk and Talks and quarterly Plant Walks.
The heart of our educational efforts are the youth programs offered throughout the year. Our preK reading and discovery program; Sprouts, the UGRA 2nd Science Days and KISD 4th Grade Environmental Field Days are exceptional examples of how the nature center is instilling basic environmental awareness and best practices at an early age. The Nature Center has been engaging our community youth from its inception. We are now of an age, where the children of the early 1990’s are bringing their children to explore and learn about their natural surroundings.
